WeChat Verification Code Not Arriving: Is It Your Phone Number or Something Else?

WeChat Verification Code Not Arriving: Is It Your Phone Number or Something Else?

Key takeaways

  • An empty SMS inbox does not mean your number is unsuitable. First, check where registration has stopped.

  • WeChat may ask for additional verification with help from another user. Buying a new number does not replace that check.

  • An incorrect country code, message filtering or a SIM with no network connection can prevent you from receiving the SMS.

  • When signing in to an existing account, a new number cannot replace the one previously linked to it.

  • For an account with conversations and contacts, you need a number you can keep accessing after registration.

You install WeChat, enter your number and wait for a message. Nothing arrives. You try again, restart the app and check the digits. You start to wonder whether you need a Chinese SIM after all.

But WeChat registration does not always end with a single code. Sometimes the app is waiting for a different action; sometimes the message really has been delayed along the way. It is too early to buy another number before finding out which.

What does the app say right now?

Start with the screen where you got stuck.

If WeChat says it sent an SMS and opens a code entry field, the immediate issue is message delivery. If you see a QR code and a request to contact another user, the app is waiting for help with verification. If it mentions a restriction or too many attempts, requesting another SMS will not resolve that.

There is also a less familiar option: the app may ask you to send an SMS containing specific text. In that case, you are not supposed to receive a code. Before waiting, check who is meant to send the message to whom.

It is an easy mistake to make. A short instruction in English can look like the usual “We’ve sent you a code.” You then spend half an hour checking an empty inbox while WeChat waits for you to do something.

The number is correct, but the message does not arrive

The simplest mistake is beside the number field: the wrong country is selected. The country code must match your phone number, not the country you are currently in.

If the code is already selected separately, do not enter it again in the number field. After copying a number from your contacts, check for extra digits and spaces too.

Next, check the phone itself. The SIM must be switched on, connected to a network and able to receive messages. This is easy to overlook while traveling: your travel eSIM provides internet access while the primary SIM receiving the code is switched off.

Look in your messaging app as well: spam, blocked senders and filters for unknown numbers. Checking the number, country code and SMS filters is also covered in WeChat Pay setup guidance.

If ordinary messages arrive but the WeChat code does not, give your carrier the request time and the service name. Receiving a message from a friend does not test delivery from every sender.

WeChat asks someone else to scan a QR code

At this point, stop waiting for an SMS: the app has moved to an additional check.

WeChat asks an existing user to help with registration. The screen explains who is eligible. The conditions vary, so “find anyone who uses WeChat” does not always work. Even a friend with a long-established account may be unable to help.

A purchased number with SMS reception does not complete this part of the process. It only handles receiving messages if WeChat offers that verification method.

You do not need to give the person your password or login code. Registration stays on your phone while your friend completes the action WeChat requests.

If other verification options appear, they apply to your current registration. Someone else’s instructions may show a different set of buttons.

The code arrived, but you still cannot sign in

This is a different stage. Your number received the message, but the app has not finished verifying the account.

For example, it may ask for another user’s help after you enter the code. Or you may be signing in on a newly purchased phone and WeChat asks for an additional check. Receiving the same SMS again will not necessarily move you forward.

Do not wipe your old phone yet. The account still signed in on it may help you complete the steps offered on the new device.

Payment setup can cause another mix-up. Registering with WeChat and linking a bank card are separate processes. If the code was requested after you entered banking details, check the sender and recipient number on screen. It may be a bank verification step that changing your WeChat number will not fix.

What if you buy a Chinese or virtual number?

A delayed SMS alone is not a reason to buy a Chinese number. WeChat’s form lets you select a country code, and additional checks can appear even after phone verification.

Before getting a separate number, decide what you need it for:

  • Creating a new account.

  • Receiving another code on a number already linked to an account.

  • Changing the number on an existing account.

These are different tasks. A new number cannot receive an SMS addressed to the old one. Creating a second account will not restore the first account’s conversations either.

Revosim’s SMS reception catalog includes a WeChat section. Before ordering, check the available country, how long the number can receive a message and the service terms. Receiving a code still does not remove any additional verification inside the app.

If you use WeChat to talk to suppliers, colleagues or friends, a one-time number quickly stops being a one-time matter. You may need access to it again after changing phones.

When to stop retrying and ask for help

After several failures, it is tempting to change everything at once: the number, network and app. Then it becomes hard to remember which error came first.

If the app reports too many attempts, wait before trying again and follow its instructions. There is no promise that registration will work after exactly an hour or a day.

If the number is correct, the SIM receives messages and WeChat keeps returning the same error, prepare a screenshot, the request time, the number’s country and your phone model. The WeChat Help Center has sections for login and registration. If you can access the app, you can also use Help & Feedback.

The frustrating part is that you have not even messaged anyone yet, but registration has already taken up your evening. Still, a new number is not the answer every time you get stuck. Sometimes the fix is spotting the wrong country code, finding a filtered message or completing a separate verification step. Once you are in, keep access to the number and set a password, so the next time you open WeChat, you can get straight to the conversations you installed it for.
