Why Telegram Won’t Accept Your Phone Number During Registration

Why Telegram Won’t Accept Your Phone Number During Registration

Key takeaways

  • “Invalid phone number,” “This phone number is banned” and “Too many attempts” mean different things. Start with the message on your screen.

  • Enter the number in international format, including its country code. Do not enter the country code twice.

  • A new SIM can be rejected too: the purchase date does not tell you the number’s history.

  • For registration, start with an updated official Telegram app on your phone. Some ways of receiving a code are unavailable in other apps.

  • If Telegram takes you to the code entry screen, the number has passed this stage of verification. The next step is to check delivery or the login method offered.

You enter your number, tap the button and get an error instead of a code. You double-check the digits and try again. Same number, same result.

There are several possible reasons: a typo, a banned number, a request limit or an app that cannot complete the registration process. “It won’t accept my number” does not distinguish between them. Start with the message below the number field.

What does the screen say?

The wording varies by language and app version, but the main errors look like this:

MessageWhat to do next
“Invalid phone number”Check the country, country code and every digit
“This phone number is banned”Contact Telegram support
“Too many attempts”Stop making requests and wait until you can try again
A prompt to update the appUpdate the official Telegram app
A message saying the code was sentCheck exactly where it was sent
A request for an additional password after entering the codeComplete two-step verification or follow the recovery options offered

Telegram’s documentation lists invalid numbers, banned numbers and too many requests as separate errors. Correcting the format does not lift a ban, and reinstalling the app does not remove a request limit.

The number is in the wrong format

Telegram uses international format: a plus sign, the country code and the phone number.

If you select a country from the list, its code is already in a separate field. Pasting a complete number can sometimes duplicate it. For example, you may end up with the +90 country code entered twice.

Another mistake involves the domestic dialing prefix. A Turkish mobile number starts with 0 when written for use within Türkiye, but that zero is dropped after the international country code +90.

Check three things:

  • The selected country matches the phone number, rather than your current location.

  • The country code appears only once.

  • No digits are missing or added.

Telegram does not support landline numbers. Telegram FAQ

If all the digits are correct and the error remains, repeatedly changing the format will not help. Save the exact error message, then check the app or contact support.

Telegram says the number is banned

The message “This phone number is banned” refers to the number you entered. There is no need to wait for an SMS after this error.

It can appear on the first registration attempt with a recently purchased SIM. That alone does not prove you broke any rules or that the number was banned just now.

You can describe the problem in the Telegram support form and include your number in international format. Useful details include:

  • The exact message on screen.

  • The country and carrier.

  • The date of your first attempt.

  • The app name and version.

  • Whether you have used Telegram with this number before.

If you bought the SIM recently, mention that too. A single error screen cannot establish the reason for the ban, and the support form does not promise a response within a set time.

Why a new number can be rejected too

Buying a new SIM does not mean the number has never belonged to anyone else.

Telegram mentions previous owners’ activity and certain virtual or VoIP numbers among the reasons an account may face restrictions immediately after it is created. That explanation concerns restrictions within the service. It should not be applied to every registration failure.

The difference shows up on screen:

  • If login stops at “This phone number is banned,” you need support with registration.

  • If the account opens but you cannot message certain people, the issue may be a messaging restriction.

For the second situation, Telegram’s help pages suggest @SpamBot. It does not replace a support request about a number you cannot sign in with at all.

Too many registration attempts

Repeated code requests can trigger a temporary restriction. Telegram then displays a message saying there have been too many attempts.

At that point, tapping the button again will not get you any closer to registration. If the app shows a countdown, wait until it ends before trying again. Without a countdown, there is no universal “wait one hour” rule.

Telegram has limits on code requests and errors that specify a waiting period. The duration depends on the service’s response.

Reinstalling the app does not turn the next request into a first attempt. A new phone is no reason to assume the restriction on the number has disappeared either.

You are registering through an app that cannot complete the process

For your first registration, start with the latest official Telegram app on Android or iPhone.

In some cases, receiving a code by SMS or phone call is only available through the official mobile apps. The web version, desktop app or a third-party client may not be able to follow the same process. This restriction is described in Telegram’s authorization documentation.

If you started registration in a browser and got stuck:

  1. Install or update the official Telegram app on your phone.

  2. Enter the same number in international format.

  3. Read which verification method is offered on screen.

You do not need to remove a working Telegram app from another device first. That signed-in account may still be useful for receiving the code.

The number was accepted, but no SMS arrived

Once you reach the code entry screen, read the text above it. Telegram chooses how the code is delivered.

If you are already signed in with that number, the code may arrive in the Telegram service chat on another device. Waiting for an SMS will only delay the login. Codes for signing in to Telegram itself arrive in that service chat, rather than the “Verification Codes” chat used for third-party services.

If the screen says an SMS was sent, check that you can access the number, that it has a mobile network connection and that it can receive messages. Wait for the countdown before requesting another code.

A phone call is not available in every case. If there is no call button, you cannot switch to that delivery method yourself.

Telegram asks for a password instead of opening a new account

After you enter the code, Telegram may ask for a two-step verification password.

If you created the account before, this is an additional password set in the account settings. It is different from the SMS code and the app’s lock passcode.

This screen can also appear with a recently acquired number because an account already exists under that number. Follow the recovery or reset options Telegram offers. Guessing passwords adds failed attempts without explaining where the account came from.

If the app warns that resetting will delete data, read the conditions on screen first. Resetting and creating an empty account will not restore the old conversations.

Can you use a virtual number for Telegram?

“Virtual number” covers several different services. Some deliver messages to an online dashboard, some provide a dedicated mobile number, and others give you access only until you receive a single code.

A number’s ability to receive SMS does not mean Telegram will accept it for registration. The reverse can happen too: Telegram accepts the number but offers a verification method that your paid service does not support.

The Revosim numbers for Telegram section lists available countries and SMS reception offers. Before ordering, check the message waiting period, cancellation terms and whether you can access the number again later.

If Telegram immediately says “This phone number is banned” or “Invalid phone number,” give Revosim support that exact wording. “The code did not arrive” does not explain where registration stopped.

For an account with work chats and personal conversations, you need a number you can keep after the first login. You will need to verify it again when changing phones or if you lose access to your signed-in sessions. Telegram recommends keeping control of your account’s phone number. For this purpose, Revosim offers a US eSIM with a phone number. Learn more.
